In this keynote from HOW Design Live 2019, Stephen Gates delivers one of his most powerful and personal talks to date—laying bare the systemic dysfunction of creative teams, the psychological baggage we carry, and what it takes to not just survive, but lead. Originally titled The Future Is Creative and now better known as the Exist Loudly keynote, this is a no-BS blueprint for unlocking creative potential at scale.

Key Themes & Insights:

1. The Design Industry’s Moment of Reckoning

  • We’re living through a historic creative opportunity—but most teams aren’t capitalizing on it.

  • 83% of companies sit at the low end of design maturity; most can’t articulate the value of design.

  • If we don’t break through, the resources go elsewhere, and this “design moment” becomes a cautionary tale.

2. Bullshit, Biases, and the Blockers to Change

  • Our biggest problem isn’t ideas—it’s the culture, politics, and dysfunction surrounding those ideas.

  • Most orgs are better at rationalizing mediocrity than enabling innovation.

  • Change fails when we treat behavior instead of the thinking that drives it.

3. Creativity Is a Social Movement, Not a Process

  • Great design is the visual expression of great thinking—but companies confuse design and creativity.

  • Creativity needs structure and belief. Balance process with culture.

  • Behaviors like “putting customers at the center” and “inviting diverse perspectives” can unlock real change.

4. Cognitive Bias Is Your Silent Enemy

  • Confirmation bias: only hearing what supports your view.

  • Observation selection bias: seeing your idea “validated” everywhere.

  • Projection bias: assuming others think like you—inside and outside your team.

  • Understanding and naming bias creates a shared vocabulary for better collaboration.

5. Design Imposter Syndrome Is Real—and So Are You

  • There are five types of imposters: The Perfectionist, Superman/Superwoman, Genius, Individualist, and Expert.

  • Everyone feels broken, tired, or like they’re faking it. Talking about it isn’t weakness—it’s leadership.

6. Your Brand Is Your Leverage—Own It

  • Your brand is not where you’ve worked or went to school.

  • It needs to be consistent, credible, creative, and memorable.

  • Stand for something—even if that means some people won’t like it. Clarity attracts the right opportunities.

7. Exist Loudly. Always.

  • Courage, vulnerability, risk, and emotional exposure are the real creative tools.

  • Stop pretending. Stop waiting. Start showing up fully and honestly.

  • You already have the answers—stop seeking validation and start building.

Bold Closing Statement:

You’re not a commodity. You’re a catalyst. The future isn’t something that just happens to us—it’s something we design. So say the thing. Show the work. Shake the table. And all the while, stay crazy.
