Leadership isn’t just strategy and spreadsheets. Creativity isn’t just skill. In both, the real differentiator is emotional intelligence — the ability to understand yourself, manage your reactions, empathize with others, and communicate with intention. In this episode, Stephen breaks down why EQ matters more than IQ for long-term success, and how to strengthen yours.
This is a no-BS guide to emotional intelligence made for creatives and leaders who want to lead better, build trust, and stop getting in their own way.
EQ = Recognizing, understanding, and managing your own emotions — and others’.
IQ drives ~10–25% of success. EQ? The rest.
The most emotionally intelligent leaders don’t always have the loudest voices — they have the most resonant impact.
Know what you feel and why.
Understand your creative highs, blocks, and emotional triggers.
Start with a journal. Reflect. Rewind. Be honest with yourself.
Core traits: Emotional awareness, self-confidence
Stay cool when the heat’s on.
Don’t let emotions hijack the moment or kill trust.
Core traits: Self-control, trustworthiness, adaptability, conscientiousness, openness to change
Drive that’s bigger than titles and timelines.

The non-negotiable superpower.
Truly listen. Read body language. Ask how people feel, not just what they need.
Core traits: Understanding others, service orientation, developing people, cultural/political awareness
Influence without forcing. Communicate clearly. Inspire people forward.
EQ builds better relationships, better teams, and actual traction in your leadership.
Core traits: Influence, communication, conflict resolution, change leadership, collaboration
Journal what you feel — not just what you do.
Practice the pause: respond, don’t react.
Say thank you. Ask “Are you happy?” more often.
Praise sincerely. Apologize authentically.
Surround yourself with people who challenge you — emotionally and intellectually.
If your message is right but your delivery is off, the result still fails.
Influence isn’t granted by title — it’s earned through emotional connection.
Without EQ, your leadership ceiling is real. And low.
Sorry doesn’t mean anything if nothing changes.
If you want to lead better, create better, and connect deeper, start with your own emotional awareness. Because your work only gets better when you do.
