Crazy One Conversations
A new free themed monthly online group conversation series.

I’m lucky enough to get to travel the world speaking to and working with teams, leaders, and creatives of all experience levels.  This has let me see that we all are unsure of how to proceed with our careers, struggle with design imposter syndrome, and other problems that we all think are unique to us. We don’t know where to fix start to fix these problems and can’t seem to take the time to connect with other people to discuss them, find solutions, and solace.

To try and help with this problem I am creating Crazy One Conversation which will be a new monthly online gathering that gives a small group of people the opportunity to share their insights, dig into the challenges you’re facing, and open up conversations on a single topic dealing with creativity, leadership, career development and more.

The next Crazy One Conversation

ROI of Design

As creatives, we have the ability to affect business in ways we haven’t seen since the last Industrial Revolution, BUT all of that opportunity comes with the responsibility of showing the impact of our work. In-house, agency and freelancers are all struggling to find the best ways to do this so n this Conversation we will discuss how to deal with the asks to show the ROI of design, what you have been doing that has been working, what hasn’t been working and give you some new resources and connections.

How much does it cost and who can attend?

Crazy One Conversations are all free and open to anyone who wants to attend, but you will need to RSVP through Eventbrite as space will be limited to no more than 20 people per Conversation. If the Conversations sell out too quickly on a regular basis then I will be moving the process to a lottery to make it as fair as possible.

Who hosts the Conversations?

I will be the main host for all the conversations but I also want to make sure we all get as much as possible out of each topic so from time to time I will be inviting special guest co-hosts who are industry leaders, experts, and friends to join us and share their special expertise and experience on the topic.

What happens if they sell out?

Since the Conversations will be limited to small groups, they may sell out quickly. If a Conversation sells out I will host up to 3 Conversations at different times on that month’s topic to try and let as many people attend as possible. If all 3 Conversations sell out, then I’ll make an episode of The Crazy One, where I’ll anonymously share the best insights from those 3 conversations.

Where will they take place?

We will have all Conversations on Zoom so you can join from anywhere. After you RSVP for a Conversation, you will receive a Zoom link and instructions on how to join the Conversation.

What will we talk about?

Possible topics could include (in no particular order): Managing imposter syndrome, becoming an intrapreneur, improving collaboration, overcoming cultural biases and presets, managing and mentoring creatives, understanding cognitive bias, building trust across teams, avoiding burnout just to name a few on my list.

Managing imposter syndrome

Even the most successful creatives a little secret we all share – from time to time we feel like frauds. It’s called design imposter syndrome and it is a psychological phenomenon where you have a belief that you’re inadequate despite evidence to the contrary. In this conversation, we will look at why it is something we all have, the 5 different types of imposter syndromes, and discuss what we have all done to keep it in check.

Are there any rules or guidelines?

I have a few simple, common-sense ground rules to help everyone be as comfortable, open, and honest as possible.

This is Vegas: In these Conversations, I want everyone to share openly and honestly, so what is discussed in the Conversations can not be shared in any public forums or on social media. If this happens, you will be banned from all future events with no exceptions. Do not share any confidential company information as the participants are not under NDA.

Be present: Please be present and contribute in any way you are comfortable with so we all can get as much out of this time as possible. This means turn off your notifications (Slack can survive without you for an hour), mute your phone (they will leave a voicemail), close your email (it will be there when we are done), and whatever else could distract you.

Privacy matters: I will not share any of your information with the group, other groups, other companies, or use it for any marketing. If you want to continue to talk with someone after the Conversation is over, you are welcome to do so with their permission and if they share their contact information with you.

Participation style: This is a conversation, not a lecture so make sure you give everyone who wants to participate a chance to talk by not dominating the conversation, letting other people finish talking, and think about asking as many questions as statements.

Attendance: I understand that life and work can create unexpected events, so I DON’T CARE if you are a few minutes late or have to leave a Conversation a few minutes early. I DO CARE if you RSVP and then are unable to attend. If this happens, please notify me ASAP so I can release your spot back to the community, and someone else can participate. If you register for the Conversation and do not attend, you will not be able to register for future Conversation.

No assholes: Conversations are a safe place to share and learn. Any bullying, intimidation, sexism, hate speech, or general asshole behavior will not be tolerated, you will be removed from the Conversation immediately and will not be able to attend any future events. No exceptions. Any misconduct or questionable conduct that makes other members uncomfortable will be warned after the first occurrence and removed from the Conversation after the second occurrence. No exceptions.
